"Bathroom

A wet room surrounded by the Costa Rican jungle and a built-in tub overlooking a Japanese beach feature in our latest lookbook, which brings together bathrooms with enviable nature views.

The following homes are united by their dreamy coastal settings, framed by intentionally large windows.

This glazing is especially effective in the homes’ bathrooms, which were built to make their striking surroundings design features in its their own right.

This is the latest in our lookbooks series, which provides visual inspiration from Dezeen’s archive. For more inspiration, see previous lookbooks featuring reclaimed materials, statement sofas and colourful taps.

Achioté, Costa Rica, by Formafatal

Achioté is the name for a pair of rammed-earth villas that Czech studio Formafatal perched on a jungled hillside in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.

Each villa features a statement, colour-coded wet room characterised by concrete shower stools. Brutalist in style, the rooms’ floor-to-ceiling glazing reveals the abundance of lush vegetation outside.

Across the globe on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, local practice Dualchas Architects applied similar floor-to-ceiling glazing to the bathrooms of this cliffside home.

Slotted into the more secluded spaces of the duo of connected volumes that make up the house, the bathrooms are cleverly concealed but still enjoy expansive views of the coastline.

Lulla House is a renovated holiday home that overlooks the ocean in Kamakura, Japan.

Tokyo studio I IN designed the building with large windows to make the most of its setting.

Art Villa, Costa Rica, by Formafatal and Refuel Works

Formafatal collaborated with fellow Czech studio Refuel Works to design Art Villa, another holiday home in Playa Hermosa where the surrounding jungle defines the bathroom.

A freestanding stone tub complements mismatched ornamental cement tiles from Nicaragua, while slatted timber flooring imbues the space with a spa-like feel.

Louvred shutters clad the top floor of this beach house next to Sydney‘s Bilgola Beach, and fold upwards to expose the living spaces to fresh air and sea views.

Among the spaces on this floor is a large, wood-lined bathroom positioned next to an ocean-facing balcony. American firm Olson Kundig chose a classic white freestanding bathtub, which pairs with the pale timber interior.

American studio Field Architecture designed this Californian home in Big Sur to “bring the residents closer to nature with every turn”.

In the bathroom, a boxy, deep-set timber tub was placed behind one of the house’s many windows, selected to provide views of the surrounding coastal landscape.

Thin layers of stone clad portions of the walls, echoing the building’s chiselled exterior.

Designed as a rural getaway, Heatherhill Beach House is a wooden holiday home positioned on the Danish coastline, informed by vernacular barns.

Copenhagen studio Norm Architects constructed a built-in tub in the bathroom, which was designed to reference Japanese bathing traditions.

Lined with chalky walls, the bathroom features a timber-lined window overlooking the surrounding trees, so that bathers can watch the seasons change.
