Many of the experimental forms and techniques he explored would not become commonplace until decades later.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related-in-article-wrapper\" id=\"recommended-item-single-story\">\n<article class=\"related-in-article\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/06\/08\/antoni-gaudi-centenary-100-years\/\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- Can this image be in the exclude lightbox list? --><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"Gaud\u00ed Centenary illustration\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" data-src=\"http:\/\/angesfinanciers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/gaudi-series-illustration-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"related-in-article-text\">\n<h1>Read:<\/h1>\n<h2>Gaud\u00ed Centenary celebrates the legacy of an architect like no other<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/article>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Across a career spanning almost 50 years, Gaud\u00ed experimented with a range of styles, yet several defining characteristics can be traced across his architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Gaud\u00ed is often quoted as saying &#8220;the great book, always open and which one must make every effort to read, is the book of nature,&#8221; and his reverence of the natural world is one of the defining features of his work.<\/p>\n<p>One example can be found in the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia basilica, where towering columns were designed to resemble trees, featuring branching leaf canopies, sequoia trunks and the double twist of oleander flowers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2338402\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2338402\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2338402 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Interior of Sagrada Familia church\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-src=\"http:\/\/angesfinanciers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gaudi-1.png\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2338402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gaud\u00ed took references from the natural world when designing the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But his study of nature went beyond visual references and extended into the mathematical structure of his buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Gaud\u00ed often used complex naturally occurring forms such as catenary arches, helicoids, hyperboloids and fractals, making him notably ahead of his time in doing so.<\/p>\n<p>The use of this kind of organic forms would not become widespread until decades later, with the emergence of computer-aided design tools. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/parametric-design\/\">Parametricism<\/a> movement, which later embraced similar geometries, was not named until 2008.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2338403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2338403\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2338403 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Exterior of Church of Col\u00f2nia G\u00fcell\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-src=\"http:\/\/angesfinanciers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gaudi-2.png\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2338403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gothic elements can be seen across Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s career<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s work is often divided into distinct stylistic periods, gothic architecture remained a lasting influence throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p>This can be seen particularly clearly in projects such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Episcopal_Palace,_Astorga\">Episcopal Palace<\/a> in Astorga bishop&#8217;s residence and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bellesguardgaudi.com\/en\/\">Torre Bellesguard<\/a> residence, which offer an almost fairytale interpretation of Gothic architecture.<\/p>\n<p>But Gaud\u00ed was not interested in simply reproducing the style. Instead, he sought to develop it further and, in his own view, perfect it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2338404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2338404\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2338404 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"Hanging chain architectural model\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-src=\"http:\/\/angesfinanciers.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Gaudi-3.png\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2338404\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gaud\u00ed used hanging chain models for buildings like the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gaud\u00ed&#8217;s work is also notable for its exuberant use of colour and ornamentation.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most recognisable aspects of his style is his use of mosaic and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ceramics\/\">ceramic<\/a> tiles, often arranged in bright patterns and contrasting colours.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, nature provided a source of inspiration for Gaud\u00ed.
