"Steel

In this week’s comments update, readers are discussing Carmody Groarke’s conversion of a former textile workshop into an office block in London.

The studio added an extension clad in galvanised steel to the roof of the existing grey brick structure, which was originally constructed in the 1970s.

“Always a fan of adaptive reuse”

Commenters struggled to reach a consensus. “Intelligent, subtle and elegant,” wrote David Foster. “It strikes a visual contrast with the surroundings but unexpectedly fits very well with it,” they suggested.

Also in favour of the design was Markus, who said “I absolutely love this beautiful building and believe it shows the way to a quieter, more considered, respectful and sustainable way to treat and design our environments.”

“It’s unapologetic and I respect that,” commended Prado Sellinger. “Always a fan of adaptive reuse,” they added.

The Discreet Architect felt “it is commendable that the existing building was largely retained and extended rather than demolished – we need more of this.”

However, not everyone agreed. “Galvanised steel is an unfortunate design choice,” argued Al. “It’s cold, joyless and too crisply detailed to be considered ‘industrial’ – it just looks dated and unattractive.”

“Looks like an oversized garden shed”

Some Dezeen readers were left unimpressed by a Victorian house that was renovated and extended by Studio Bark in Kent using a flatpack U-build system and finished with cork panels and timber slats.

“Is this really cheaper than conventional construction, or does it just look that way?” wondered Karl.

Souji also had their doubts, saying: “That extension does not look good now, can’t even think how badly it will age.”

“I suppose if you’re happy with the back of your lovely Victorian villa looking like an oversized garden shed, then this is probably just the job for you,” sneered Alfred Hitchcock.

“The housekeeper is crying”

Also causing a stir in the comments section this week was a Madrid hotel designed by French designer Philippe Starck to feel like a home with collections of books, photographs, vases and objects displayed throughout the spaces.

But not everyone was convinced by the concept. “So flea market shopping – got it,” concluded Robin518.

“Nice place, if you like a lot of clutter,” added Ken Steffes. “The housekeeper is crying,” contributed Design Junkie.

However, commenter Franky Four Fingers simply wrote “love love love”.
