In this week’s comments update, readers are discussing Herzog & de Meuron’s transformation of the Titlis Tower in the Alps into a sculptural tourist attraction.

The studio transformed the former telecommunications tower, which was built in the mid-1980s at 3,000 metres above sea level, into a panoramic viewpoint, and readers opinions were split.

“Dope af, everybody knows it”

“That’s such a great project,” said Operacreep.

Jb agreed, saying, “this is the best thing H&dM has done – contextually respectful and structurally artistic.”

“Dope af, everybody knows it,” added Ben.

“Dream project,” added Heywood Floyd. “I think the blurred distinction between architectural and structural design is actually a testament to the high quality of both.”

“I have been snowboarding there, and if I recall correctly there wasn’t even a toilet at the top station, and no way to get a 360 view from the mountain.” wrote Rd from personal experience. “They did seriously add functionality to that place.”

Other commenters weren’t so positive. “This big eyesore should have been dismantled and removed from the site,” said Bbob displeased.

“It certainly isn’t a beauty,” wrote Alfred Hitchcock, similarly unimpressed. “Rather like an oil drilling platform.”

“Science fiction has now landed on top of Earth architecture,” joked Pa Varreon.

"MRTN

“The awkward junctions and clashes here are delicious”

One project which readers could agree on was the red-toned extension of a Victorian terrace in Melbourne by Australian studio MRTN Architects.

“Gorgeous palette,” wrote JZ. “The interconnection to the courtyard, even just visually, is the cherry on top.”

“Lovely spaces, materials, colours and details,” said Alfred Hitchcock also dazzled by the design.

With nothing but praise, Jb wrote, “This is architecture first, functionality second – as it should be for architects. The awkward junctions and clashes here are delicious.”

Though brief, Nicholas praised it as “stunning!” and Souji called it “crisp!”

Garden walls conceal compact London house by Inglis Badrashi Loddo

“Lovely little project”

Also stoking debate this week was the completion of the Walled Courtyard house in south London by local studio Inglis Badrashi Loddo.

Though largely positive, readers offered critiques alongside their applause.

“Remarkable what they’ve done in the space available,” said Chris D, to which Chris Rogers replied, “agreed, though I’d also LOVE some colour and texture please – this feels very cold and clinical.”

Also showing support, Jkkajs wrote, “nicely detailed house, and good spaces given the very tight site.”

“Lovely little project,” said Whateverandeverman before adding, “The location of the AHU gives me pause though.”

“It no doubt satisfies the brief, but it does so without architecture,” said Jb who wasn’t as smitten. In response, Radiohedgefund wrote, “sometimes no design can be the design though.”

“My concern with the property would be how well the flat roof deals with rainfall,” Radiohedgefund added later.
