“Tent-like” Eve Music Hall by BIG under construction in Croatia

Danish studio BIG has revealed images of its Eve Music Hall, a music venue with a facade designed to resemble swooping theatrical curtains, under construction in Croatia.

Designed for Čepin in eastern Croatia, the 10,000-square-metre project will be BIG‘s first completed music performance venue and will accommodate around 4,000 guests indoors and up to 25,000 outdoors.

When complete, Eve Music Hall will have two separate auditoriums connected by a foyer. Its facades were made from timber and limestone, and designed to drape down from the roof like fabric that opens up to let visitors in.

“The Eve Music Hall is conceived as a musical eruption on the infinite horizon of the Slavonian fields,” BIG founder Bjarke Ingels explained.

“Two concert halls, one big and one small, frame a public space between them. Facades of timber and stone are draped like fabrics, merging the verticality of the halls with the horizontality of the landscape,” he continued.

“Slits in the stone curtains open up, inviting visitors to enter and explore. The main foyer is framed by the two mirror-clad walls of the concert halls, repeating the tent-like timber roof at infinity.”

The main foyer, which connects the two volumes, will feature a striking ceiling made from curved suspended timber beams designed to look like wooden curtains.

The studio has designed mirrored walls for this space to reflect light and guide visitors towards the music venues.

Eve Music Hall was created to host everything from orchestra events to standing gigs, with the larger of its two volumes designed as a music hall and the smaller a congress hall.

Outside, additional areas will be used for festivals, open-air events and performances.

Eve Music Hall’s exterior will be a “veil of stone”

“Eve is composed of two pragmatic music boxes, wrapped in sheets of Slavonian limestone that gently descend from the scale of the building to the scale of a bench,” BIG partner João Albuquerque said.

“Once inside and between the two venues, the veil of stone is supported by mass-timber hulls that shelter and shape the main foyer at the heart of Eve, creating a warm wooden world,” he continued.

“Outside, as it rests gently within the agricultural plain, the building has only fronts, where all facades contemplate equally the entire natural surroundings in all directions.”

The venue is part of a wider project to create a new cultural destination in Croatia’s Slavonia region. BIG also recently released renders of its design for a Nashville performing arts centre covered in a curtain of swooping metal pipes and a Hamburg opera house designed as “a landscape of concentric terraces”.
